Floristic Composition and Ethnobotanical Description of Plants of Sabaloka Area- River Nile State, Sudan

The floristic compositions of the study area have not been well studied before. The aim of the present study is to survey and document the floristic composition and medicinal uses of the plants of the study area. The present study was carried out during the period 2016 - 2018, through several extensive and intensive field trips that covered different habitats (valleys & River Nile banks) of Sabaloka area central Sudan. Floristic studies included collection, preparation, identification, classification, vernacular names and updating plant species synonyms. A total number of 144 plant species (117 Dicotyledonous & 27 Monocotyledonous) were identified belonging to 108 genera and 40 families. The family Poaceae was the biggest, including the highest number of genera and species, followed by the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) family. From the identified species of the present study, 46 species were found to have medicinal values, and these represented (32%), of the total plant species of the study area. Scientific names of 26 species and 9 families were updated to their new names. The present study indicates that Sabaloka area has a diverse floristic composition with useful plants for medicinal uses that may be of potential future benefits
